What is Sound Therapy? A Newbies Guide:

If you’ve ever felt your favourite song lift your spirits, like driving through heavy traffic in the car belting out Heart or Duran Duran, or a simple gentle hum calm your nerves, you’ve already experienced the healing power of sound. Sound isn’t just something we hear — it’s something we feel. The vibration moves through our bodies, influences our emotions and even shifts our energy.

This is the heart of sound therapy: the use of vibration, frequency, intention and sound to support balance in the body and mind.

🌿 What is Sound Therapy?

Sound therapy is a holistic practice that uses instruments like crystal bowls, Tibetan bowls, gongs, chimes, drums and the voice to create vibrations that work at a deep level. These sounds don’t just reach your ears — they ripple through your whole body.

Because our bodies are made up of around 70% water, sound waves travel through us easily. Just as a pebble creates ripples in a pond, sound creates gentle ripples through our cells and nervous system. It is wonderful Wellness!

💫 How Does it Work?

When we’re stressed or anxious, our brainwaves tend to sit in high “beta” (busy brain) frequencies — alert and restless. Those annoying thoughts of the to do list, the overthinking of what others think of us, procrastination. The tones and rhythms of sound therapy can guide the brain into slower states — “alpha” (calm), “theta” (deep relaxation, meditation) or even “delta” (rest and sleep).

The result? Many people experience:

  • A calmer nervous system

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Deeper sleep

  • Emotional release

  • A sense of clarity and peace

Some people also describe physical benefits such as easing of headaches, tension, or chronic pain. Beyond the nervous system, sound therapy also works on a more subtle level.

In many holistic traditions, the body is understood to have energy centres known as Chakras. Each chakra is responsible for aspects of balance or imbalance in our lives. For example, the Root Chakra, located at the base of the spine, relates to feeling grounded, safe, and stable, with our basic needs met.

Different sounds and frequencies are believed to resonate with these energy centres. With singing bowls, the note "C" (my Colin ;) ) is often associated with the Root Chakra — helping to shift stagnant energy and restore a sense of safety and balance. When the chakras are aligned and flowing, we feel more centred, re-energised, and open to life’s natural rhythms.

I myself have experienced all these benefits for me personally and members of my family.

🎶 What is a Sound Bath?

A sound bath is one of the most popular forms of sound therapy. Unlike its name suggests, you don’t get wet! I had one poor woman rock up wondering where the literal tub was...seriously! Instead, you lie down comfortably, often with a blanket, pillows and on a yoga mat and allow yourself to be “bathed” or "immerged" in sound.

Crystal bowls, gongs, drums and other instruments are played in soothing waves. All you have to do is lie back and receive. Many people drift into a dreamy state, some fall asleep (snoring is normal) and others feel emotions gently rise and release. Every sound bath is a unique experience. What is important is the breathwork and grounding at the beginning, your trust in your practitioner and also trust in yourself and your innate ability to move energy through as you need.

🌸 What About 1:1 Sound Therapy?

While sound baths are wonderful for community and collective energy, 1:1 sound therapy is more personalised. In these sessions, I work with you directly, using specific instruments and techniques to support your individual needs or intentions — whether that’s releasing stress, supporting healing, or deep relaxation. And I get to use my incredible tuning forks for pin point accuracy and support.

✨ My Journey with Sound

My path to sound therapy came after years of seeking healing myself. Following multiple surgeries, infertility, anxiety and stress, chronic pain and nerve damage, I discovered holistic approaches that transformed my health and wellbeing. Sound became one of the most powerful tools for me — and it’s now one of the most beautiful practices I get to share with others.

As a certified Sound Therapist, I’ve seen people leave sessions with softer shoulders, brighter faces and lighter hearts. It’s a reminder that healing doesn’t always come in a pill or a procedure — sometimes it comes through vibration, resonance, and the simple act of slowing down.
